Living Planet Conference 2019
We have lost our sense of connection to one of the greatest sources of human nourishment and planetary health – our food choices. In the last 50 years the production, preparation and packaging of food have changed dramatically due to new technologies as well as social and cultural shifts. We need to think holistically about long-term solutions.
Nourish the nation – join us at the table
As South Africans move to cities, and our income increases, so diets change. We eat more meat and dairy, waste more and over-rely on packaged and processed food. On the other hand, South Africa needs to produce 50% more food by 2050. We won’t be able to address our three big challenges of undernutrition, over-nutrition and the environmental degradation and climate impact from food production and consumption without a transformative change in our food system. This is the focus of the 2019 Living Planet Conference in Pretoria on 25 July.
Join WWF at the table to debate, discover and taste the possibilities of a regenerative food system producing nourishing food for all.
The LPC video playlist
The full video of the 2019 LPC will be posted shortly. In the meantime, revisit the proceedings of the 2018 conference, whose theme was “Water – what next?”
What can you expect at the conference?
LPC 2019 is a collaboration of chefs, farmers, civil society, scientists, government and business, who will together explore holistic, long-term solutions to the three big food challenges.
Expect a rich and immersive experience that will require us to tackle the issues intellectually and with compassion while also engaging the taste buds.
What will be the highlights?
- The former CEO of Business Leadership South Africa, Bonang Mohale, known as much for his patriotism as his active role in seeking to advance the country’s interests, will deliver the key note address.
- Celebrity chef, food stylist and author Zola Nene, who promotes the goodness of farming and shopping with nature in mind, will provide a cooking demonstration.
- WWF will announce the winner of the 2019 Living Planet Award. Mavuso Msimang was honoured in 2018.
