Since 2008, WWF South Africa and Woolworths have been involved in several collaborations in areas including water stewardship and alien vegetation clearing, agriculture, seafood sustainability and procurement, food loss and waste reduction, product lifecycle assessments, dairy supplier guidelines, alien vegetation clearing projects, as well as partnering on other ad hoc events and initiatives.
Through these engagements, WWF has provided public support of Woolworths’ “Good Business Journey” and its environmental and socio-economic development commitments.
Some of the projects within the partnership have focused on strengthening water resource management practices nationally, reducing negative impacts of agriculture, improving seafood and aquaculture sourcing, exploring low carbon pathways, and reducing food waste throughout the supply chain.
Woolworths is also a leading retailer in the WWF-SASSI programme (Southern Africa Sustainable Seafood Initiative), a member of WWF South Africa’s Business Network, a founding member of the SA Plastics Pact, and an active participant in the Alliance for Climate Action South Africa.
