Vodacom is one of our long-term, valued partners since 2002, when the company joined the WWF Business Network.

Since then, Vodacom strengthened its partnership with WWF by supporting various marine conservation projects and more recently, funding the education and awareness work of the WWF-Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) programme.

Vodacom has helped WWF-SASSI to combine technology with conservation by creating an app that uses facial recognition and machine learning to identify fish species. Over the years, the partnership has grown, and in 2023, Vodacom and WWF launched a project in the Saldanha Bay Aquaculture Development Zone (SADZ) on the country’s West Coast, which uses AI technology to power an Early Warning System for whales and other large marine animals and activates an Incident and Emergency Response Protocol if a marine mammal becomes entangled in the bay.

In addition, our partnership with Vodacom has, over the years, helped young people across the country learn about marine conservation in fun and engaging ways. This includes incorporating relevant subject matter into school curricula and training young chefs on the importance of sustainability in cooking and hospitality.

Vodacom’s expertise in technology and digital communications allows us to take an innovative approach to conservation, ensuring our efforts are effective and lasting.

Vodacom is also a member of the WWF South Africa Business Network and the Alliance for Climate Action South Africa.
