In 2021, WWF South Africa and Sappi launched a transformational partnership aimed at restoring natural ecosystems, in the Umkhomazi catchment.
Located within the Southern Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area, this critical project supports a catchment-wide strategy to improve water stewardship and governance, strengthening the natural systems that Sappi depends on for sustainable production.
Through this collaboration, we are working to strengthen water governance to promote responsible and effective management of water resources in the Umkhomazi catchment; improve water stewardship practices to ensure long-term sustainability in the Southern Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area and protect key biodiversity areas to maintain healthy, functional landscapes and support improved water security for surrounding communities and ecosystems.
Together, we aim to create lasting environmental and social benefits by safeguarding one of South Africa’s most important water source areas.
Sappi is also a member of the WWF South Africa Business Network.
