Potential for solar thermal heating in South African hospitals

South Africa has some of the highest levels of solar irradiance in the world, but it is still highly reliant on fossil fuels for energy. Solar thermal technologies can greatly reduce hospital dependency on fossil fuel-based electricity, which can result in savings and reduce the carbon footprint of hospitals.

The focus of this publication is to investigate the potential for solar thermal technologies in hospitals in South Africa. It presents an overview of available technology, solar resources and the market penetration of solar thermal systems in South Africa.

The report presents a case study to determine the feasibility of implementing a solar thermal system in a hospital in Paarl in the Western Cape.

This report will be useful to state and privately run hospitals, engineers and construction professionals working in hospitals and policy makers.
