Billed as The Biggest Hour for Earth, WWF is inviting all South Africans to come together to make a powerful statement for nature by pledging at least 60 minutes of action in celebration of Earth Hour 2025.

Since its inception in 2007, Earth Hour has served as a global moment of unity to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues. Last year’s campaign saw a remarkable achievement, with WWF South Africa ranking among the top 10 countries worldwide for participation and engagement. Building on this momentum, WWF aims to make Earth Hour 2025 even bigger and more impactful!

Pedzi Gozo, Executive Manager of Strategic Communications at WWF South Africa, says: “Earth Hour has always been about inspiring and supporting individuals to act for change. It is a visible demonstration of how we can work together to advocate for global action to reverse the twin threats of global biodiversity loss and climate change. We can all make a difference as long as we come together to take action. In this spirit, let us all work together to make Earth Hour 2025 the Biggest Hour for Earth!”

How to take part

We are encouraging people across the country to give an hour for Earth, whether through sustainable food choices, fitness and wellness activities, creative engagements, or entertainment. This is an opportunity for individuals to have fun, get involved, and take meaningful action for nature. We believe that everyone can contribute, and the activities are as diverse as the people who will participate. By signing up for Earth Hour, participants will be in the running for exciting prizes, including a ‘glamping’ weekend away with AfriCamps.

In addition, WWF South Africa is hosting two major Earth Hour events in the beautiful Kirstenbosch and Walter Sisulu national botanical gardens, in Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively on the 22 March 2025. Gates open at 6pm and the screening of the family friendly movie Happy Feet will commence at 8pm. Tickets cost R50 for children and R100 per adult and bookings can be made via Webtickets.

In line with WWF South Africa’s commitment to reach communities, we are also expanding the reach of Earth Hour 2025 by hosting free community screenings across the country in underserved rural, township and peri-urban locations. These screenings will take place from 15 to 31 March, combining entertainment with vital environmental education. Details will be made available locally.

For those who wish to do their own thing, we encourage individuals and companies to plan their own planet-friendly activities to celebrate Earth Hour. Here are some ideas:
