Earth Hour 2025: The Biggest Hour for Earth Unites Millions to Celebrate and Support Our Planet
LOCATION – On 22nd March 2025, at 8:30 pm local time, Earth Hour returns for its 19th edition, bringing together millions of people around the world in support of our planet. As the world’s largest grassroots environmental movement, Earth Hour invites participants from over 180 countries and territories to unite in the ‘Biggest Hour for Earth,’ celebrating our planet and driving action for its future.
Since its inception in 2007, Earth Hour has been known for its symbolic "lights off" moment, with landmarks, homes, and businesses around the world turning off their lights to raise awareness for environmental issues. This year, Earth Hour encourages participants not only to switch off lights but to also take part in the global call-to-action to "Give an hour for Earth." Supporters are invited to dedicate 60 minutes to doing something positive for the planet, whether it's cooking a sustainable meal, enjoying a mindful walk in nature, or engaging in eco-friendly activities that inspire change. In 2024, over 1.5 million hours were contributed globally, and Earth Hour aims to surpass that number by reaching 2 million hours in 2025.
Kirsten Schuijt, Director General of WWF International, emphasized the urgency of this year’s Earth Hour, stating, “The stakes have never been higher. The past year was the hottest on record, capping off the hottest decade, with the hottest seas ever recorded. We’ve witnessed historic wildfires, storms, and droughts as well. Our world is in peril, and we are rapidly approaching dangerous climate tipping points beyond which key ecosystems may never be able to recover. Earth Hour is a powerful reminder of the urgency to act while we still can. It is not just about switching off lights; it’s about switching on a global movement for change. By engaging individuals, communities, and businesses, we can create a collective force that drives real impact and inspires hope for a sustainable future.”
Earth Hour's Hour Bank offers a variety of activities for people to engage in, based on their interests, from food and fitness to art and entertainment. This platform encourages participants to make environmental action accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful. Yves Calmette, Senior Director of Brand and Network Communications at Earth Hour Global, stated, “Earth Hour is all about making environmental action accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful. By aligning our actions with people’s passions and interests, we can inspire even more individuals to join the movement. The Hour Bank is designed to show that everyone can contribute to protecting our planet, no matter where they are or what they love to do.”
As Earth Hour builds on the incredible momentum of 2024, the goal is to surpass 2 million hours of action in 2025. This is a rallying cry for the collective action needed to address the environmental challenges facing our planet.
Earth Hour is not just a moment but a movement that has continued to inspire and mobilize people globally. It reminds us all of our collective responsibility to create a more hopeful, resilient, and sustainable future for the planet.
