Almenkerk Wine Estate

Situated in the Elgin valley, and surrounded by the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve which is classified as a World Heritage Site, the farm is owned by the Van Almenkerk family who have a philosophy of producing the highest quality wine in a sustainable manner.

Twenty hectares of the farm has been surveyed by CapeNature and found to be of high conservation value, especially for protection of Elgin Fynbos/ Renosterveld Mosaic vegetation. The site also supports at least three Red Listed threatened species of plants and many more may be present. When the Van Almenkerks bought the farm, natural areas were heavily infested with alien species, but to date they have restored 15 hectares to pristine fynbos.

The process is ongoing and they aim to maintain a 50/50 balance between fynbos and vineyards. There is also a nursery for indigenous plants on the property.
