Boland Groot Winterhoek SWSA Collective

The Collective is a “platform of platforms”, uniting strong actors in the Western Cape. It focuses on the Berg and Breede rivers in the Boland, and the Olifants and Doring rivers in the Groot Winterhoek.

The rainwater that fills the Western Cape’s rivers and dams is a vital water source for millions of people, farms and industries downstream. The main threats to the health of the Boland and Groot Winterhoek strategic water source areas are invasive alien plants, land degradation, fragmented governance, pollution from urban areas and some agricultural activities, climate change, large-scale plantations and uncontrolled fires.

The Western Cape is a drought-prone, water-stressed province. The drought of 2015-2019 – and the looming “Day Zero” – showed the reality of living with drastically less water. After the threat of Day Zero, various active role players started to talk about joining forces to ensure Cape Town was better prepared next time. One of these exciting initiatives was the forming of the Boland Groot Winterhoek Strategic Water Source Areas (SWSA) Collective in 2022.

Region: Western Cape
