Rhino managers handbook

Good, science-based biological management of threatened species is fundamental in population recovery.

Rhino conservation requires a balance between all aspects of management. However, the recent poaching pressure has resulted in reduced focus on biological management. In March 2018, WWF-SA and partners convened a workshop to address this gap by bringing together managers and researchers, from SADC and further afield, who are currently involved in rhino conservation.  The learnings shared at workshop resulted in the development of the Rhino Manager’s Handbook.

These practical guidelines provide a ‘go to’ source of current best practice of biological management of wild rhino to assist managers and decision makers. The handbook is arranged into focus areas from planning and risk profiling, through all aspects of management and monitoring, and finally translocation.
