Lessons from WEF governance

Inclusive living landscapes with thriving communities

The water-energy-food (WEF) nexus offers an integrated approach to managing growing demands for water, energy and food in rural areas.

However, implementing WEF nexus solutions often involves competing resource claims, which can deepen inequalities and challenge social justice. The concept of “WEF communities” is a bottom-up approach to ensure local decision-making is integrated into national frameworks.

By fostering decentralised governance and aligning actions with the National Development Plan 2030, WEF nexus governance can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future for all.

This 20-page policy brief explores WEF nexus governance in South Africa through a dual lens: insights from multidisciplinary scholars and the lived experiences of rural communities. It emphasises the critical need for transdisciplinary collaboration that integrates local knowledge, ensuring that solutions address the realities of vulnerable households.

It also includes WEF case studies and WWF’s tangible approach of working at a landscape scale.

Created by a consortium of partners, this policy brief is part of a series with practical factsheets on participatory approaches about Enabling community champions and Creating knowledge festivals.
