Groot Constantia
Founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, Groot Constantia is the oldest wine farm in South Africa.
Founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, Groot Constantia is the oldest wine farm in South Africa. It borders on the Table Mountain National Park and acts as a buffer zone between residential suburbs. A cleverly-designed fence was created so that baboons can exit but not enter. They also contribute to monitoring the movements of wild caracals.
Groot Constantia has a strong focus on water-saving initiatives from clearing alien invasive vegetation to using drip irrigation. They plant indigenous trees each year and collect seeds from resident fynbos species so as to re-establish more fynbos areas on the farm. The winery continues to monitor how much water is used: in 2015 it took 13 litres per bottle of wine and now it is down to 9 litres in 2017.
