Ivana Samujh

2025 intern

Ivana Samujh is passionate about protecting animals and the marine world, but she also loves thrifting, eating out, swimming, taking walks and painting in the garden. She has been placed as an intern at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town where she is working in marine biology. Born and raised in Durban, she went on to complete her Bachelor of Science Honours in Zoology at the University of Pretoria. Ivana’s role at the aquarium involves animal husbandry, wildlife management, environmental education and research.

We asked her a few questions to find out more about her work, studies and inspirations:

What are you passionate about?

I am deeply passionate about giving back to the environment and conserving the planet, especially the animals that inhabit it. We have a responsibility to protect nature from human-driven destruction and to care for animals, particularly when they cannot help themselves. My passion comes from a strong sense of stewardship and a desire to restore balance between people and the natural world.

What inspired your choice of study?

I have always had an innate love for animals. From a young age, I would instinctively try to help any injured or vulnerable animal I came across, whether it was stuck in a pool or found in my garden. This constant drive to care for animals has stayed with me and ultimately shaped my academic path in zoology.

What excites you about your internship?

I am excited to gain hands-on experience in marine biology and to be part of a team that shares my passion and values. Working at the Two Oceans Aquarium is a unique opportunity for me to contribute to impactful conservation work, learn from professionals and grow within a supportive and knowledgeable community.

What are your expectations of this internship?

I expect to gain practical, valuable skills that will strengthen my career in conservation. I look forward to contributing to research and environmental education initiatives and deepening my understanding of marine ecosystems. This internship is also an opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice while making a tangible difference.

What contribution do you hope to make towards a future in which people and nature thrive?

I hope to inspire and motivate others to take action in protecting our oceans and the planet. The greatest contribution would be knowing that my work encouraged others to care more deeply, act more consciously and possibly follow a similar path.

Who inspires you most and why?

My parents inspire me the most. They have always supported my dreams, no matter how ambitious they are, and have taught me the value of determination, kindness and compassion. Their strong work ethic and selfless approach motivate me to live with purpose and empathy.
