Zeenat Patel
2025 intern
Zeenat Patel is passionate about using mapping and science for positive social and environmental change, but she also loves reading stories that make her think deeply. She currently lives in Pretoria and studied Environmental Science at the University of Pretoria. After completing her Honours, she did her Masters in Environmental Management. Zeenat is currently placed with M.A.P Scientific Services as a geographical information systems (GIS) technician intern, where she supports the implementation of nature-based and geospatial solutions for environmental organisations.
We asked her a few questions to find out more about her work, studies and inspirations:
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about contributing, even in small ways, to building a more just, equitable and sustainable world, particularly in South Africa. My academic interests have fostered a deep passion for environmental justice and for using scientific research and tools, such as GIS, to explore how we can reconcile the needs of people and the environment.
What inspired your choice of study?
As a high school student, I knew I wanted to make a positive impact on the world around me but was unsure which degree to pursue. Environmental Science attracted me because it integrates and explores connections between multiple disciplines and is a field where many people are actively driving positive change.
What excites you about your internship?
I am excited to move beyond the academic environment and apply my knowledge to practical settings. I look forward to gaining a deeper understanding of how GIS and research can be applied to address real-world environmental challenges. This hands-on experience will help me translate theory into impactful action.
What are your expectations of this internship?
I expect to develop and refine both my technical GIS and scientific skills while also building important soft skills relevant to the workplace. I hope to make a meaningful contribution to M.A.P Scientific Services and add value to the projects I am involved in, all while learning and growing professionally.
What contribution do you hope to make towards a future in which people and nature thrive?
I aspire to be a bridge builder between various environments and disciplines because creating a future where people and nature thrive is a complex endeavour and requires diverse perspectives. I want to promote interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, helping to bridge the gap between research and practical application. Additionally, drawing from my experience in student leadership and activism, I hope to support and inspire like-minded students interested in this field.
Who inspires you most and why?
It is hard to single out one person because I have been fortunate to be inspired by many. However, my family stands out as a key source of inspiration. They have always exemplified hard work and caring for the community, and this motivates me deeply.
