Prudence Khomo
2025 intern
Prudence Mamello Khomo was raised in Harrismith in the Free State but attended the University of the Witwatersrand where she moved through the ranks to complete her Master of Science in geographical information systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. She is also a dedicated bookworm. As she embarks on her internship with M.A.P Scientific Services as a GIS technician, she knows her late father would be very proud of her. Through her internship, she is involved in spatial data analysis, environmental mapping and natural resource management. Her work plays a vital role in helping organisations make informed decisions that balance sustainability with human development needs.
We asked Prudence a few questions to find out more about her work, studies and inspirations:
What are you passionate about?
My passion lies in harnessing the power of GIS to better understand environmental changes and support policies that promote resilience and conservation. Ultimately, I want to contribute to a future where technology and nature work hand in hand to create sustainable and thriving communities.
What inspired your choice of study?
My interest in geography was sparked by an inspiring high school teacher who introduced me to the fascinating ways natural and human systems interact. Geography has helped me understand spatial patterns and environmental processes that shape our world, from climate systems to urban development. This academic foundation naturally led me to GIS, a tool that brings data to life through mapping and spatial analysis.
What excites you about your internship?
I am excited to learn from experts in the field and look forward to contributing to meaningful work that supports environmental sustainability. I am also excited about gaining practical experience that will shape my future as an environmental GIS specialist. I am eager to develop my skills in communicating complex spatial information effectively to diverse audiences.
What are your expectations of this internship?
I expect to grow professionally during this internship. I hope to refine my skills in spatial analysis and remote sensing while also developing my problem-solving and communication abilities. I also expect to learn more about how GIS is integrated into environmental consulting.
What contribution do you hope to make towards a future in which people and nature thrive?
I hope to contribute by promoting the use of geospatial tools in environmental planning and conservation. Whether it is through mapping vulnerable areas, supporting disaster preparedness or tracking land use changes, I want my work to bridge the gap between science and policy for the benefit of both people and the planet.
Who inspires you most and why?
The person who inspires me most is my sister. She has always been a source of strength, encouragement and wisdom in my life. Watching her overcome challenges has taught me the importance of perseverance and staying true to one’s goals. Her unwavering support and belief in my potential have played a big role in shaping who I am today.
