Strengthening Collaboration for Indigenous Peoples Rights and Biodiversity: MINAS-WWF Partnership Revamped
On November 29, 2024, a pivotal milestone in the MINAS-WWF partnership was marked with the signing of a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Hotel Mont Febe in Yaoundé. This significant event brought together nearly 100 attendees, including key stakeholders from sectoral administrations, international NGOs, development partners, local NGOs, and community leaders from WWF’s areas of intervention.
The ceremony, co-chaired by Madame Pauline Irène NGUENE, Minister of Social Affairs (MINAS), and Martin Kabaluapa, Regional Director for WWF - Congo Basin, signals the beginning of an enhanced collaboration aimed at safeguarding the rights of indigenous populations within WWF’s biodiversity initiatives across Cameroon’s forested landscapes.
The partnership will focus on the following key regions:
• Sangha Tri-National (TNS): Lobeke National Park
• Tri-National Dja-Odzala-Minkembe (TRIDOM): Nki, Boumba Bek National Parks, Ngoyla Wildlife Reserve, Mengame Gorilla Sanctuary
- Campo-Ma'an UTO: Campo Ma'an National Park, Manyangue Na Elombo-Campo Marine National Park
- Coastal Forest Programme: Korup, Mount Cameroon, and Bakossi National Parks, Banyang Mbo, and Mount Muanenguba Sanctuaries.
This updated agreement replaces the previous MoU, initially signed on April 10, 2019, and sets a renewed strategic framework for collaboration between MINAS and WWF.
It reaffirms both parties' commitment to advancing the protection and promotion of indigenous peoples' rights while fostering biodiversity conservation efforts.
This partnership embodies a shared vision of sustainable development and the empowerment of indigenous communities within Cameroon’s biodiversity-rich areas.
