Water Security for Pongola

The headwaters of the Pongola catchment are situated in the high Enkagala Grasslands. They are a high water-yield area, providing water to 2 million downstream users as well as being a biodiversity hotspot. This area has been identified as a strategic water source area and is part of the 8% of the South African landscape that provides more than 50% of our run-off.

This area is currently threatened by a proliferation of coal mining in the headwaters, unsustainable land and water use practices, alien plant invasion and pollution from urban areas.
