Blue Crane

The Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Karoo Crane Conservation Project aims to better understand the biology, threats to and population dynamics of South Africa’s national bird, the Blue Crane (Anthropoides paradiseus) in the Karoo. Sponsored by The Green Trust, the project has been in existence since 2005.

The Blue Crane has the most restricted range of all crane species found in the world and is a near endemic to South Africa. Although the wheat fields and pastures of the Western Cape contain the largest number of Blue Cranes in the country, it is the Karoo that holds that largest population of the Blue Crane in natural habitat. The primary threat to this crane in the Karoo is the collision with overhead power lines. In addition, collision with phone lines, fence entanglements and poisonings result in mortalities.
