Best management practice
High level security remains essential, and the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project supports security and monitoring of black rhino source populations.
But it is also critical to increase growth rate of the overall black rhino population as rapidly as possible. Numbers of black rhino are lost through slow population growth as well as through poaching. And as with all investments, small differences in annual growth rate make a big difference over time.
Therefore the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project aims to promote rapid population growth by establishing new black rhino populations on large areas of good habitat, that are able to sustain significant black rhino populations. Annual removals of black rhino from source populations are calculated to keep black rhino within the ecological carrying capacity of each reserve and to stimulate the growth of those source populations.
