When WWF was established, much of its attention was focused on wildlife conservation, but in recent years the organisation has expanded its focus to conserving the environment as a whole.

In South Africa, WWF still focuses its efforts on conserving bird, plant, reptile, fish and animal species that are of special importance ecologically (e.g. key elements of the food chain or help the regeneration of habitats), economically (exploited commercially) and culturally (if they are important icons for communities or demonstrate broader conservation needs). Therefore by focussing on a small set of species and by conserving the places they live in, WWF hopes that most of the other species sharing the planet will also be conserved.

The WWF global network has identified critical species that are especially important, either for their habitat or people.

Of these species, the African Elephant, African Rhino, Marine Turtle, Southern Ocean Albatross, Great White Shark and Cetaceans can all be found on the African continent and surrounding oceans.
