More than a decade ago Sappi and WWF-SA entered into a partnership known as the SappiWWF TreeRoutes Partnership. This partnership aims to facilitate the development of sustainable and financially viable nature-based tourism facilities at sites of high biodiversity importance within forests and wetlands. These projects involve local communities and other relevant stakeholders as beneficiaries. The areas where projects have been implemented are along the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape, throughout KwaZulu-Natal and in Mpumalanga.
The seven projects that have received funding are the Marutswa Forest Board Walk, the Southern KZN Birding Route, Wakkerstroom Bird-Guide Training Centre, Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, Thonga Beach Lodge/Mabibi Campsite, Ongoye Forest Birders Camp and the Karkloof Conservation Centre.
