Green Choice

GreenChoice is an ambitious, integrated partnership created to support the development of a better way of producing and consuming the products of our natural environment.
It is driven by those who have witnessed the transformation of our landscape and oceans and understood the implications of the mounting food crisis and the role ecosystem health plays in food security.

Coordinated by WWF-SA and Conservation International this initiative is engaged in limiting the negative impact of food production, processing and consumption. While the main focus is on sustainable food and wine products, GreenChoice also supports animal fibre and wild harvested flowers projects. Thus far, the South African conservation sector has established partnerships with the fisheries, wine, Rooibos Tea, potatoes, honey, sugar, citrus, red meat, wild cut flowers and ostrich industries. These initiatives aim to enhance sustainable production, through the development and implementation of biodiversity best practice production guidelines that aim to increase long term productivity, thereby contributing to socio-economic development, without compromising the environment.

A key GreenChoice product is the WWF Living Farms Reference aimed at promoting better production practices and ultimately standards for well-managed farms in all agricultural sectors. It is intended that – by standardising national sustainable agriculture guidelines – we develop a powerful market and policy instrument. Moreover, well-managed farms will ensure long term productivity and help check the diminishing quality of our soils.
