The World Wide Fund for Nature’s Earth Hour City Challenge is a global competition that recognises the substantial long-term efforts of cities to combat climate change. This year’s competition is comprised of two processes, a technical jury process and a public’s choice award – the “We Love Cities” challenge.

In the technical process, two South African cities (out of six who participated by registering their green urban development plans for building, transport, energy and food systems on the carbonn Cities Climate Registry - cCCR) were judged as finalists. They are Cape Town and Durban. Of the two cities, Cape Town was selected as South Africa’s Earth Hour City capital. The announcement was made on 4 February 2014.

However, the challenge isn’t over yet, because as City Challenge finalists, both Cape Town and Durban have joined 31 cities across the globe in qualifying for the “We Love Cities” award where you – yes you – can vote for your favourite city. Visit welovecities.org, to read about both cities and their journeys towards sustainability, and to cast your vote. Which city will you choose to love? Will it be Durban or will it be Cape Town?

The We Love Cities campaign runs for two months between January 17th and March 27th. One of the 33 finalist cities will receive the We Love Cities Award on March 27th in Vancouver.
