WWF Honda Partnership

WWF and Honda have partnered to drive a cohesive Marine Parks Programme that will support and improve Marine Park (commonly referred to as Marine Protected Areas or MPA´s) management in South Africa.

Objectives

  • The WWF Honda Marine Parks Support Unit will play a pivotal support role in delivery against the following objectives:
  • Equip Marine Park staff with the necessary hardware to perform their duties
  • Effectively develop skills and capacity of Marine Park Management teams.
  • Develop management plans, inclusive of compliance, monitoring and business plans
  • Build a high level of public awareness support for the role of Marine Parks
  • Facilitate and promote the expansion of our national system of Marine Parks so that it effectively protects the diverse marine biodiversity of South Africa.

Programme Goal

The WWF Honda Marine Parks Partnership's goal is to develop a Marine Parks Support Unit that brings together the strengths and competencies of national government, relevant conservation agencies, the private sector and civil society to deliver our vision.

Achievements

Patrol vessel sponsored to MPA’s WWF, Honda, Falcon Inflatables and Garmin have come together over the last few years to provide the following:
  • A 5.1 metre ribEXTREME inflatable patrol rig with two 50 hp four-stroke Honda outboard engines was purchased for the Goukamma Marine Protected Area (MPA) in 2006.
  • In November 2007, De Hoop MPA received a 7.6 metre ribEXTREME patrol rig mounted with two 90hp four-stroke Honda outboard engines and Garmin Radar.
  • Robberg MPA received a 6.5 metre ribEXTREME patrol rig mounted with two 75hp four-stroke Honda outboard engines and Garmin Radar in October 2008.
  • In February 2008, the Kogelberg(incorporating the Betty´s Bay MPA) received a 6.5 metre ribEXTREME patrol rig mounted with two 75hp four-stroke Honda outboard engines and Garmin Navigational equipment.
