WWF CAPE Marine Programme

The WWF C.A.P.E. Marine Programme is an initiative of the South African Government, with support from international donors, to protect the rich biological heritage of the Cape Floristic Region. This Programme seeks to unleash the economic potential of marine resources through focused investment of key resources, while conserving nature and ensuring that all people benefit.

The Garden Route and Kogelberg are the focal areas for the WWF C.A.P.E. Marine Programme. These areas are biodiversity hotspots with a rich array of animal and plant species, whilst their scenic beauty has made them preferred destinations for holiday makers, with great benefits to tourism industries in the areas. However, marine environments and the biodiversity and activities that these environments support are facing immense threats from over-fishing, illegal poaching, pollution and resource-user conflicts.

The WWF C.A.P.E Marine Programme aims to intervene through supporting the effective management of our network of MPAs as well as through the establishment of new MPAs. A suite of planned projects and initiatives will be implemented to contribute towards improving the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity and resources in both these areas, as well as ensuring sustainable socio-economic benefits to the people of the region.
