Woolworths became the first retailer to join the Water Balance Programme. WWF has been working with Woolworths to better understand and reduce their water footprint across their entire supply chain. Woolworths' investment will go towards clearing alien invasive black and silver wattle in the Enkangala Grasslands area, one of the Programme's priority nodes. This rehabilitation work will result in water benefits proportional to the Woolworths operational water use.

Sonae Novobord, the chipboard manufacturing company, officially joined the Programme in December 2010. The company will invest in clearing alien invasive plants, mainly black and silver wattle, also in the Enkangala Grasslands area. Through this investment, the company will offset its annual direct water use of 183 824kl.
The investment made by Sonae Novobord will enable clearing on land recently declared as part of the KwaMadlangampisi Protected Area, thus furthering WWF’s endeavours to invest in the long term security of these important ‘water factories’.
