Water scarcity and ecosystem degradation poses a major challenge to the economic growth of South Africa.
WWF is working with key water users in priority catchments to promote water use efficiency, and combat catchment degradation. WWF is promoting the concept of water as a shared risk, and facilitating the formation of strategic partnerships between key stakeholders to develop innovative solutions in priority catchments.

Examples of this work include:
  • Promoting private sector water stewardship at the national level. This includes convening a national water dialogue to harness private sector participation in water resource management, policy formulation and implementation. We are also working with the private sector to help them understand their water use footprint and develop strategies to mitigate their impact.
  •  Water stewardship at the catchment level. This includes undertaking catchment risk assessments in conjunction with key stakeholders in the catchment, and implementing payments for watershed services schemes.
