WWF promotes the implementation of the ecological reserve, a key requirement of the National Water Act, and implementing environmental flows in key river basins in the region.
This body of work focuses on the integration of environmental flow requirements into development planning and dam operations in South Africa and the region.

Examples of this work include:
  • Working with key power operators in the Zambezi to implement environmental flows on a Zambezi river, which is a major source of electricity for South Africa.
  •  Commissioning river management plans in priority river catchments in South Africa to implement the ecological reserve.
