South Africa has possibly one of the most robust water legislation in the world, but its effective implementation still remains a major challenge.
WWF is working with the government to ensure the effective implementation of the National Water Act, and other key policies in South Africa.

This work includes:-
  • Partnering with key institutions such as the Water Research Commission to promote the conservation of freshwater ecosystems
  • Promoting the effective management of water resources in transboundary river basins
  • Support the development and implementation of catchment management strategies in priority Water Management Areas.
  • Capacity building of local water management institutions and empower local communities to participate in water resource management.
  • Facilitating public-private sector partnerships for effective catchment management
