Forum on China-Africa CooperationThe Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) was founded in 2000 to strengthen cooperation between China and African countries and is primarily a framework for high-level ministerial dialogue.
The main form of engagement, the tri-annual Ministerial Conferences, gives rise to declarations and action plans which are then implemented in the period between the conferences.
Through its Declaration and Action Plan, FOCAC plays a pivotal role in ensuring that Chinese investments bring long-term benefits to African countries. It is for this reason that WWF offices in China and Africa have been engaging and working with key stakeholders and decision makers.
Among the areas of mutual interest are identifying and advancing sustainable development pathways for Africa that will ensure its future environmental integrity, while facilitating poverty alleviation, energy access, and responsible production and consumption support.
South Africa hosted the most recent FOCAC meeting in December 2015.
WWF curtain raiser to FOCACWWF South Africa, together with WWF-China and WWF African offices, hosted a high-level conference titled ‘FOCAC –Seizing Opportunities to Create Sustainable Development Pathways’ on 1 December 2015, a day before FOCAC kicked off.
This conference brought together African and Chinese stakeholders from government departments, state-owned companies, private enterprises, academia, and civil society, and presented a unique opportunity to explore the role of FOCAC and Chinese investment in identifying and advancing sustainable development pathways for Africa, facilitating poverty alleviation, energy access, and responsible production and consumption in line with the recently agreed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
