Wessa/WWF Eco-Schools Programme

WESSA/WWF Eco-Schools Programme is an environmental education programme that offers sustained engagement between schools and environmental agencies, and continuously awards schools for their efforts.
Schools are assessed within their capacity and international flags have been awarded to both under- and well-resourced schools in rural and urban areas - who demonstrate positive environmental and social change - across the country.

The programme is regarded as a flagship, and one of the most effective environmental education programmes in South Africa to date.

WWF has been instrumental in implementing the programme locally since 2003 and continues to generate and manage a major portion of the funding. Pareto Limited and The Green Trust assumed the role of national funder in June 2010 from Tetra Pak, who had generously funded the programme for the first six years. The programme is implemented by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA).

Eco-Schools is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that originally started in Europe in 1994. The local programme is unique in that it had to be adapted for schools within the framework of a developing country. The local programme is fully integrated into the national curriculum and provides critically needed support to teachers, through a network of node coordinators and regional coordinators.

Teachers are equipped to easily link environmental learning to the curriculum and implement practical solutions, from recycling and vegetable gardens to energy audits. This year almost a thousand schools have registered with the programme and nearly 500 received an Eco-Schools award in 2009.
