Environmental Leadership Development
WWF South Africa aims to support the development of environmental leaders to promote sustainable environmental management in whatever career they find themselves in the future, whether in government or the private sector.
Starting with primary and high school learners, the WESSA/WWF Eco-Schools Programme encourages learners to take part in environmental projects in their schools. Linked to the national curriculum statement, the programme stimulates a positive environmental ethic amongst youngsters and prompts actions to address environmental issues.
A Career Guidance Programme exposes and encourages learners to pursue careers in conservation and environmental management. Further support and work experience is offered through the Professional Internship Programme and the Leaders for Living Waters Programme, to support young graduates making the transition the work place.
Through the Southern African Conservation Education Trust, WWF continues to support the Southern African Wildlife College. Hereby WWF aims to strengthen the skills and expertise of current and future environmental managers and conservation staff across Southern Africa.
The development of a Capacity Development Strategy and Action Plan for Sustainable Natural Resource Management is currently underway to identify scarce and critical skills in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors.
WWF South Africa works in partnership with a range of key environmental agencies, such as the South African National Biodiversity Institute, South African National Parks and the Department of Environmental Affairs, amongst others, to attract, retain and enable the development of new and current professionals in the conservation sector.
Through all the above, WWF reflects its commitment to a sustainable future for South Africa.
