“The internship was pivotal in defining my career. I met some of the people who have had the most profound impact on my life and I was given a priceless opportunity to build a CV that makes me employable in the environmental sector.”

Jaco grew up in Kleinmond, a small town on the coast in the Overberg. Nestled in the Kogelberg Biosphere with its fynbos-covered mountains, dark rivers and wild seas, the town engrained in Jaco a passion for nature and sustainable development. His passion in life is to find ways to ensure that all people can enjoy a good quality of life without destroying the planet’s natural environment.

Jaco attained an undergraduate degree in Decision Making and Value Studies and a Masters degree in Sustainable Development Planning and Management at the University of Stellenbosch. His Masters research focused on the socio-economic development potential of the solar water heating industry in the Western Cape.

Jaco’s internship in the WWF-SA Climate Programme integrated various climate-related streams of work in South Africa for the first six months and involvement in the international United Nations negotiations on climate change in the second six months. For Jaco the internship was pivotal in defining his career. He met people who had the most profound impact on his professional life, and he was given the invaluable opportunity to build a resume that has made him employable in the environmental sector. Jaco emerged from the internship feeling even more dedicated to the cause of environmental conservation.

Jaco currently works as a Programme Coordinator in the WWF International Global Climate & Energy Initiative. His primary responsibility is to coordinate the WWF team that engages in the United Nations negotiations to combat climate change.
