Join us at the official WWF Earth Hour 2011 event on Saturday 26 March 2011 at the Orlando West Regional Park in Orlando, Soweto.

We will switch off Orlando stadium at 8.30pm and be treated to a candle-light concert by the Grammy award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir and the Bala Brothers. Gates open at 6pm and the concert is free. This event is kindly sponsored by Nedbank and supported by the City of Johannesburg.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT:

Can I buy tickets at the venue?
No. The concert is free, but space is limited, so please ensure you arrive in good time, from 6pm onwards.  The show starts at 7.30pm.  
 
TRANSPORT
There are two main options for getting to the concert:

  • Park n Ride
    A bus service will be available from Constitution Hill at the Park and Ride Facilities. The buses will leave for the Orlando West Regional Park at 6pm and 6.30pm. After the show buses will leave the venue for Constitution Hill from 9.45pm onwards. 
  • Parking at the venue
    If you're traveling by car, car-pool with friends to reduce your environmental impact. Safe parking spaces are available at the venue.

AT THE CONCERT

How long will it take to get through the gates and security checks? 
As with any major event, allow yourself plenty of time to get through the gates and security checkpoints. Gates are expected to open at 6.30pm.

What should I bring with me?
Picnic basket, camping chair or picnic blanket, candle, beverages (no alcohol), cellphone (with charged battery), suitable clothing and footwear. There are no ATM machines within the venues, so bring cash.
 
Is there food available to purchase? 
Yes.

What bathroom facilities are there available? 
There will be toilet facilities on site.

Will the concert go ahead if it rains?
Yes.

Details: Camp out in the zoo and enjoy the nightlife with a guided night walk, stargazing with the Astronomy Club or just laze around the bonfire for Earth Hour 2011.

The Birches Barn Dance

Venue: The Birches Pre-primary School

Details: The Barn Dance will draw to a close as Earth Hour begins. All lights will be switched off at 8h30 and all folk there asked to participate for the next hour in Earth Hour. As an Eco-school we will invite all present to follow the 'lights in paperbags' trail through the waterwise (Indigenous ) garden; over the wetland bridge and to the amphitheatre for a photo to record the event.

Details: uShaka Sea World is hosting a display with information about reducing energy consumption, using alternative sources of energy and highlighting the preference for local vs imported products. Ethekwini Metro will also have banners in Sea World that the public can sign to pledge to go beyond Earth Hour.

Earth Hour at Cavendish Square

Details: In support of Earth Hour, Cavendish Square and its tenants have teamed up to run a competition hosted through the Cavendish Square Facebook fan page, whereby more than R2500 worth of prizes will be given away. These prizes include a R1500 gift hamper by Poetry, a R400 Col’Cacchio gift voucher, a R400 Mugg & Bean gift voucher and two sets of double movie tickets, popcorn and coke from Ster Kinekor, Cavendish Square.
