Buildings

Buildings demand energy both to build and to run.
The energy used to make the materials for an average building today makes up about 10% of the energy consumption over its entire lifespan. There is a great opportunity to save on the 90% of energy that is used in lighting, heating and cooling a building through its lifetime.

The primary solution is to use materials and a design that maximizes the ability for the building to maintain a comfortable internal temperature and allow natural light in.

Further solutions include introducing systems that regulate the lighting, heating and cooling, providing these only when required (i.e. switching lights on only when there is someone in the room).
