:: Linefish
Fish traditionally caught with a baited hook and line from the shore or from boats. Also includes spearfishing.

:: MLRA
The Marine Living Resources Act, Article 18 of 1998 of South Africa.

:: Pre-exploitation levels
Estimated population level of fish before the introduction human induced (fishing) mortality.

:: Bycatch
Non-target animals that are caught by a fishery. These may include less valuable fish (sharks, skates), marine mammals (dolphins, seals) and seabirds (albatrosses, gannets).

:: EEZ
The Exclusive Economic Zone: The 200 nautical miles zone from a country's coastline out to sea over which it holds exclusive economic rights (e.g. Fishing rights).

:: Pelagic
Refers to the open ocean habitat, and pelagic species are those that live close to the surface of the ocean

:: Demersal species
Species that live on or near the ocean bottom

:: Underexploited
The fishery has had no substantial impact on the stock

:: Overexploitation
The fishery has reduced the stock to between the target (level at which fishery is sustainable) and threshold (level below which stock may not be able to recover) biological reference points

:: Collapsed
The stock has been reduced to below the threshold biological reference point

:: Depleted
