WWF South Africa
Karoo Programme

The Succulent Karoo is a winter rainfall area that stretches from southern Namibia, down through the Richtersveld and parts of Namaqualand into the Little Karoo. It holds, by far, the world's greatest number of succulent plants, not to mention a fascinating collection of insects (a whole new order of them has been found here!) and has been recognised by WWF internationally as one of the 200 biological 'hotspots' in the world.

Fortunately, this special region has had a champion, in the form of the late Mr Leslie Hill, who set up the Leslie Hill Succulent Karoo Trust, administered by WWF-SA. The Trust has been unmatched in its contribution towards the conservation of the Succulent Karoo, its most recent purchase being another 14 200 hectares to add to Anysberg Nature Reserve, bringing the total area conserved to more than 60 000 hectares.

Mr Hill was 94 years old when he passed away in January 2003. His Trust lives on.
