Land Protection Campaign
Sir Francis Drake, who passed the Cape in 1580, described it as: “A most stately thing, and the fairest Cape we saw in the whole circumference of the Earth”.
Today the fairest Cape remains in fragments scattered across the landscape.
The Land Protection Campaign aims to connect and expand these remaining pristine areas to create a network of natural corridors across the landscape, reclaiming the Cape’s scenic beauty and providing space for people, ecosystems and wildlife to thrive.
The Land Protection Campaign aims to connect and expand these remaining pristine areas to create a network of natural corridors across the landscape, reclaiming the Cape’s scenic beauty and providing space for people, ecosystems and wildlife to thrive.
World-leading scientific planning has determined 28 corridors in the Western Cape, with six of these identified as the most urgent priorities for conservation action. Together the corridors contain a large portion of the region’s most threatened ecosystems and species, and allow for climate change adaptation.
The Campaign conserves these priority corridors through land purchase and by encouraging landowners to practice conservation-minded land management (the land stewardship programme).
