Join the call for climate change action and pledge your support for a renewable energy future

In the largest climate mobilisation in history, people from across the globe have challenged governments to take action on climate change. More than 400 000 people in New York alone – and many more in 160 countries – took part in the People’s Climate March on 21 September, ahead of tomorrow’s Climate Summit.

To be hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the summit will convene world leaders to generate ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mobilise political will towards achieving a meaningful climate agreement to be decided in Paris in 2015.

All together, the countries in attendance account for more than 73% of the world’s carbon dioxide pollution from burning fossil fuels (according to the EIA’s 2011 records).

Attending leaders from the EIA’s top ten carbon emitting countries will include the heads of state (or government) of Iran, Japan, Korea, and the United States. Together with China these nations are responsible for over half of all global annual carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuel. If emissions from deforestation are taken into account, Brazil, Indonesia, and Mexico climb into the list of top ten emitters. Heads of all three countries will be attending the Summit.

Some of the most seriously impacted nations will be island states at risk from sea level rise. These will be represented by leaders including Tuvalu Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga, Kiribati President Anote Tong, and Palau President Tommy Remengesau.

Among WWF’s key asks of the summit is the call for concrete measures to address climate change, particularly the shift of financial flows and investments to technologies and sectors compatible with low carbon societies and economies, such as renewable energy. This will contribute to ensuring that the world stays well below 2°C of global average warming thereby avoiding dangerous climate change that would result in unmanageable costs and disruptions to humanity.

WWF is calling on supporters to take action and show commitment to a broader roll out of renewable energy in South Africa and across the globe by signing the Seize Your Power pledge. To seize YOUR power go to:
